Why I Am Pro-Choice

You  Conservatives are going to hate this post .  I support a woman's choice to terminate a pregnancy . Does that make me a "baby-killer ? Hardly. I've never tried to force a woman to have an abortion , nor do I want the government to force women to do this. I also have absolutely no control as an individual person over abortion. I can't stop them, and neither can any one else.
  I'm not "pro-abortion";just as those who oppose abortion aren't "pro-life". They're anti-choice.
Let's face it; abortions will happen whether they are legal or not, and  there is absolutely no way around this fact. They will find a way. And if they are too poor to afford an illegal abortion, they will try to to abort themselves, with the inevitable catastrophic results to them and their families.
No government has ever been able to stop abortion by making it illegal, or ever will. There is simply no way to enforce laws against it , and attempts to do so are not only futile but cause an egregious violation of many people's privacy, not only pregnant women.
Yes, not all women who have abortions are poor, but most are.  If we want to do something about the problem of abortion, we must decrease poverty and provide much more help for poor pregnant women so that they will be able to provide decent food, shelter, clothing, education and medical care for their children ,born or unborn. You cannot stop abortion merely by making it illegal. Poor pregnant women don't care whether their fetuses are a "person" or "alive" or "wehen life begins". The are immaterial and irrelevant.
But conservatives don't want the government to subsidize poor pregnant women,or the poor in general. That's socialism, and we don't want that here,do we?  And these poor deluded people expect poor women to give birth to children anyway? Some nerve!
What hypocrisy! Of course, they glibly advocate making abortion illegal by saying that poor women can always give children up for adoption, and that helping the poor is the job of the private sector and charities.
But these are nothing but band-aids on severe flesh wounds.  They don't and won't work.
Charities are a good thing, but they can't possibly provide help for all those in need. The government has to do SOMETHING, or many people will suffer terribly.  What good is it bringing poor, unwanted children into the world if they are doomed to abject poverty, malnutriotion, poor education, lack of opportunity , and crime, drugs and violence?
This does nothing but increase poverty, unemployment and crime, and  a vicious cycle of more poverty, crime, unemployment,
abortions, and teenage pregnancies.  Conservative solutions to abortion just don't work. In fact, they are extremely counterproductive. And those who not only oppose abortion but want to make contraception illegal are imbeciles !  This would only INCREASE abortions greatly and create a black market in contraceptives.
Take Brazil, for example. This is the world's largest Catholic nation, and abortion is officially illegal here. Yet,every year, far more abortions take place here than in the US. That's right. Countries where abortion is illegal have far more abortions that those which permit it.
But consider the prosperous nations of Europe such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium,Austria and the Scandinavian countries.  They have the world's LOWEST abortion rates. Why? Because there is little poverty here, and the government provies a secure safety net for people.
And if abortion becomes illegal again in America, how will the government enforce the law?  How will we stop women from going to dangerous back-alley abortionists?  And how will we stop women who can afford it from going to Europe or elsewhere for safe, legal abortions? Will we put up blockades at every border and airport and examine every woman of childbearing age for pregnancy ?
And how will we stop the poorest women from attempting self-induced abortions? Put up surveillance cameras everywhere and arrest, prosecute, and imprison any woman who attempts this?  What are we, Orwell's 1984 ?  I thought America was supposed to be a "free" nation.
And will the government appoint thousands of anti-abortion agents and have them scour every corner of the 50 states 24/7 ?
Was America ever intended to be a police state ?  WeMUST do something about the deplorable abortion situation in America.
But what conservatives advocate is not the way to deal with this issue.  Reversing Roe v Wade will not"protect" the unborn, nor will it bring progress of any kind to America. It will be catastrophic for countless poor women and their families, and society in general.

I'm Liberal But Not Left Wing

Yes, I'm a liberal, and I make absolutely no apologies about this. I'm pro-choice, pro-gay rights, against  the death penalty, for REASONABLE gun control, but opposed to letting the government  confiscate weapons from law-abiding citizens .
I believe absolutely in separation of church and state, because without this we are at serious risk for becoming a theocracy.
I don't like taxes, but realize that they are absolutely essential for running the government , and that just reducing taxes as much as possible doesn't increase general  prosperity, contrary to the naive belief of conservatives. They're a necessary evil.
I'm opposed to ending government help to those in need because a safety net for the unfortunate is absolutely essential for any civilized society. I believe in government support for the arts , because as a professional classical musician, I realize that our many great symphony orchestras and opera companies are at risk of going under, and some have already done so and many others are threatened.
People in Europe don't complain about government subsidies for their orchestras and opera companies; it's considered the normal thing to do there, and  theirs don't go under.
I don't worship Obama, but I don't hate him either ,  and  reject the ludicrous notion that he's the Antichrist and is going to turn America into another communist dictatorship and take all our freedom away. Sure, he's hardly perfect, but what  President has ever been perfect?
But please don't call me a left-winger. I hate being called that . The term left-winger implies that you're a Marxist and communist.
I'm anything but those things. I've never had the slightest admiration for such monsters as Stalin, Mao Zedong, Castro, Pol Pot, or other communist leaders, nor have I ever been deluded by the ludicrous notion that the former Soviet Union was a "worker's paradise."
It was anything but a paradise, and a brutally repressive totalitarian dictarorship which slaughtered millions of innocent people, and was the most corrupt , incompetent and economically inefficient government in world history.
Yes, I believe absolutely in capitalism and democracy . But not the kind of capitalism which many conservatives would like to impose on this nation, in which  those in need are denied all help and  left to fend for themselves, and where business is so unregulated that it is free to
exploit and harm the public and despoil the environment with impunity . Or where religion gets too much power.
But today, any one who has the slightest disagreement with conservative social and economic views is automatically labeled a "socialist", Marxist and communist .  Conservatives today are paranoid about communism  coming to America, despite the fact that it is pretty much dead and buried, and that there is about as much chance of America becoming communist under Obama as Osama Bin Laden converting to Judaism and settling in Israel .  Please !  Give me a break !

Conservative Hypocrisy On Obama And Funding For Abortions

Yes, conservatives are outraged and horrified  at the possibility of the Obama administration providing for poor women to have abortions . Horrors !!!   We can't let this happen ! Think of the poor unborn children !
But why don't they put their money where their mouths are ?  If they are so adamant about the government not subsidising abortions,  why don't they also want the Obama administration to provide more funds for helping those poor pregnant women so that they will be able to provide decent food, shelter, clothing ,education and health care for those "poor unborn children" one they ARE born?
Isn't this the height of hypocrisy ?  But noooo- We don't want the government to hand out money to people; that's socialism, and we don't want that here, do we ?   Don't these same people who are so opposed to abortion have the sense to realize that if these unfortunate poor women knew they could provide for their children, they would be far less likely to seek and obtain abortions ?
Those poor pregnant women are the ones least able to care for their unborn children, not to mention any children they might already have.  Is this fair to them?  Don't have abortions, but we don't give a you know what whether you  have the means to take care of them, say Republican presidential administrations.  If you can't provide for you kids, tough noogies. That's not our problem.
Sure, the unborn have rights -  UNTILL THEY'RE  BORN!!    And women who can afford it will always be able to get abortions, whether they're legal or not. No problem !   Talk about hypocrisy !
What good is being born if you have no chance of ever getting decent food, shelter, clothing, education and medical care ?  Is bringing children into the world in these appalling circumastances doing them a favor ?  Is it good for society ? Of course  not !
All it does is to create more poverty, unemployment and crime .  Great, conservatives . You
guys never cease to amaze me.

The Pot Is Always Calling The Kettle Black

The conservatives are up in arms about the Obama administration, calling it "communist", "Marxist", "socialist",and all that .  Yes, it's always liberals this, liberals that, blame the Democrats for everything , including the weather . The Democrats and liberals are all corrupt; they're "baby-killers", Godless hedonists, moral relativists, atheists, child molesters, hate America and our trooops, love communist dictators, want to allow Muslim terrorists to attack America with impunity, want to tax America to death, want to prevent private enterprise, want to corrupt our children with Godless evolution, hate Christians,Christianity and Jesus, they love homosexuals,
want to "normalize" homosexuality and have it taught in our schools, hate abstinence and want every one to be forced to see "obscene", government-funded art every day .
This is especially true of their beloved Archdemon, the dark lord Obama, the Anti-Christ !
Oh really ?  And the conservative Republicans are all God-fearing, righteous, patriotic, religious,
pro-life, above reproach and sworn enemies of the "gay agenda" ?  They're the salt of the earth,
are ever vigilant against the communist threat to America ?  Yes, they want to make government smaller, lower taxes as much as possible, end welfare and all government help to those in need, deregulate business totally. But at what cost to society ?
Please !!!!! Give me a break .  But it's all the pot calling the kettle black.  And you can't be a decent person if you're pro-choice,believe that gay people should be treated decently and not demonized and
denied rights, are against the death penalty, nelieve in government support for the arts because our symphony orchestras and opera companies need help ,too, believe in separation of church  and state,
don't want evangelists to tell them what to do with their lives, and that what consenting adults do in private is no one else's business , and that the poor and those down on their luck deserve help from the government, etc?
There are liberal hypocrites and conservative hypocrites.  Maybe left-wing extremists are too quick to see racism everywhere in America, and are too quick to blame America for all the world's ills .
But look at the hypocrisy of many conservatives, who are furious about the possibility of the Obama administration funding abortions for poor women, yet also don't want the government to do anything to help poor pregnant women so they would be much less likely to have abortions,  and are so quick to blame the poor for their plight, and who claim to virtuous but hate gay people and any one whom they consider liberal .  Or denounce homosexuality but are secretly gay, bloviate about "family values" but are guilty of adultery, frequenting prostitutes, and even having sex with minors ?
Sure, there are left-wing idiots among the politicians, commentators, celebrities etc, but there are also plenty of idiots among the conservatives .  Nobody has a monopoly on virtue.
I call them as I see them, and condemn idiots on both sides.

Why I Am Not A Conservative

Let  me  be  frank  about  this ;  I  am  not  a  conservative .  I  make no  bones  about  being  pro-choice,  pro  gay  rights,  against  homophobia ,  against  the  death  penalty ,  for  separation  of  church  and  state ,  for  REASONABLE  gun  control  but  not  confiscating  the  weapons  of  law-abiding  gun  owners ,  and  as  a  professional  classical  musician  and  advocate  for  the popularization  of  classical  music  in  America,  pro  government  support  of  our  many  great symphony  orchestras and  opera  companies, many  of  which  are  struggling  to  stay  alive  in  today's  difficult  economic  conditions .
I  believe  absolutely  in  religious  freedom  for  all  Americans ,and  though  I  am  not  a
Christian ,  I  do  not  hate  Christians  or  Christianity  in  the  least .  Or  followers  of  any  religion .  The  only  thing  I  am  opposed  to  is  the  efforts  of  many  conservative   Christians  to
impose  their  social  agenda  on  the  rest  of  this  nation .  I  also  believe  that  religion  is  a  private  matter  for  individual  people  and   that  each  of  us  should  keep  our religious beliefs  tro  ourselves .
I  see  absolutely  no  conflict  between  evolution  and  belief  in  God .  If  conservative  Christians  believe  in  creationism,  that  is  their  right ;  but  I  do  not  want them  to  impose  their
beliefs  on  others, especially  young people  in  our  schools .  If  students  want  to  pray  in  school,  they  may  do  so  to  themselves  silently  any    time,  or  in  church  or  at  home.
But  I  do  not  want students  who  happen  to  be  atheist  or  agnostic  ridiculed,  vilified  or  penalized  for  not  praying  in  school  in  the  Christian  manner .
Nor  Jews,  Muslims,  Hindus,  Buddhists  or  whatever  non-christian  faith .
But  I  am  no  left-wing  extremist  either .  I  have  never  had  the  slightest  sympathy  for  Marxism or  communism ,  nor  do  I  in  any  way  admire  monsters  such as  Lenin,  Stalin ,
Mao Zedong, Pol  Pot  or  Castro .  I  believe  in  capitalism,  but  not  the  kind  which  denies
 help to  those  in  need.
And  I  believe  absolutely in  free  speech  and   abhor  multiculturalism  and  political  correctness .
Conservatives  think  I'm  much  too  liberal,  and   left-wingers  such  as  Noam  Chomsky,
Howard  Zinn  and  Ward  Chrurchill  would  think  I'm far  too  conservative .
    That's  why  I'm  an  independent  mind .
